Why is my radiator cold at the bottom?
When you find a radiator in your house that is cold at the bottom, it’s probably because there’s debris restricting the movement of hot water to the entire radiator. This is normally caused by sludge, debris, rust and other bits of dirt.
The metal that the pipes are made of disintegrate over time which causes the metal to rust and as this rust breaks off, it is carried around your radiators and pipework. In addition to this, if you live in a hard-water area then you can add limescale build up to the mix.
If it’s just one radiator that’s causing a problem, you can have it removed and cleaned. However, if the problem stretches further than just one radiator, you may need the whole system power flushed.
A power flush uses pressure to push water and other cleaning chemicals through the system, removing all the dirt and flushing it down an outside drain. Running a power flush every now and then is worth doing to ensure your heating system is running efficiently.
